Drywall Sheets Calculator
Calculate how many 4×8 drywall sheets you need to cover walls and ceilings in a room.
How to use this tool
- Enter the room's length, width, and wall height in feet.
- Set the waste allowance (10% is standard; use 15% for complex rooms).
- The calculator outputs total wall area and the number of 4×8 sheets to buy.
Estimate how many drywall sheets to buy before your next renovation project.
Formula
Wall area (ft²) = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
Sheets needed = ⌈Wall area × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100) ÷ 32⌉
(Each 4×8 sheet covers 32 ft²; ⌈ ⌉ denotes ceiling rounding up to the next whole sheet.)
How it works
This calculator finds the total interior wall perimeter area of a rectangular room by multiplying the perimeter (2 × length + width) by the wall height, then divides by the area of one standard 4 ft × 8 ft drywall sheet (32 ft²). A user-specified waste allowance is added before rounding up to the nearest whole sheet to account for cuts, corners, and damaged panels. Ceiling drywall and window or door cut-outs are not deducted automatically.
Worked example
Worked example
- Room: 12 ft long × 10 ft wide × 9 ft high, 10% waste.
- Perimeter = 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 ft.
- Wall area = 44 × 9 = 396 ft².
- Area with waste = 396 × 1.10 = 435.6 ft².
- Sheets = ⌈435.6 ÷ 32⌉ = ⌈13.6125⌉ = 14 sheets.
Total wall area = 396 ft²; 4×8 sheets needed = 14.
Key terms
- Drywall (gypsum board)
- A panel made of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) sandwiched between two sheets of paper; the standard interior wall finish material.
- Waste allowance
- An extra percentage of material ordered to cover off-cuts, breakage, and fitting errors; typically 10–15% for drywall.
- Perimeter
- The total distance around the room's floor plan; used here to find total wall surface area.
- Sheet coverage
- A standard 4 ft × 8 ft drywall sheet covers 32 square feet of wall area.
- Ceiling (⌈ ⌉ rounding)
- Rounding a number up to the next whole integer; always applied to sheet counts so you never order too few.
Frequently asked questions
- How many drywall sheets do I need?
- Calculate the total wall area (perimeter × height), divide by 32 ft² per 4×8 sheet, and add a 10% waste factor for cuts and mistakes.
- What size are standard drywall sheets?
- The most common size is 4 ft × 8 ft (32 sq ft per sheet). 4×12 sheets are also available and reduce seams on tall walls.
