How to use this tool

  1. Enter the MPG of your current vehicle and the vehicle you are comparing.
  2. Enter your annual mileage and the expected fuel price.
  3. The calculator shows annual fuel costs for both vehicles and your annual savings.

See exactly how much money you save each year by upgrading to a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Formula

Annual fuel cost = (Miles per year ÷ MPG) × Fuel price ($/gal)

Annual savings = Annual cost (current vehicle) − Annual cost (new vehicle)

How it works

This calculator determines the annual fuel expenditure for each vehicle by dividing total miles driven by fuel economy (MPG) to get gallons consumed, then multiplying by the price per gallon. The difference between the two annual costs gives the yearly savings from switching vehicles.

Results assume constant MPG under all driving conditions and a fixed fuel price throughout the year; real-world savings will vary with driving mix, seasonal efficiency changes, and fuel price fluctuations.

Worked example

  1. Current vehicle annual fuel cost: 15,000 miles ÷ 20 MPG × $3.50/gal = $2,625.00
  2. New vehicle annual fuel cost: 15,000 miles ÷ 30 MPG × $3.50/gal = $1,750.00
  3. Annual savings: $2,625.00 − $1,750.00 = $875.00

Switching from 20 MPG to 30 MPG saves $875.00 per year at $3.50/gal over 15,000 miles.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the annual savings figure to justify a price premium without calculating the payback period (price difference divided by annual savings).
  • Holding fuel price constant over a multi-year comparison -- a sensitivity check at +/- $0.50 per gallon is worth running.
  • Ignoring that the more efficient vehicle may cost more to purchase or insure, which affects the true financial comparison.

Key terms

MPG (Miles Per Gallon)
A measure of fuel economy expressing how many miles a vehicle travels on one US gallon of fuel. Higher MPG means greater efficiency and lower fuel cost.
Annual fuel cost
The total amount spent on fuel in one year, calculated as (miles driven ÷ MPG) × price per gallon.
Annual savings
The reduction in yearly fuel expenditure achieved by driving a more fuel-efficient vehicle instead of a less efficient one.
Fuel price ($/gal)
The retail cost of one US gallon of fuel at the pump, which directly scales total fuel expenditure.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I save switching from 20 MPG to 30 MPG?
At 15,000 miles/year and $3.50/gal: 20 MPG costs $2,625/yr vs 30 MPG at $1,750/yr — a savings of $875 per year.
Is a hybrid worth it?
Compare the extra purchase price against annual fuel savings. Divide the price premium by yearly savings to get the payback period in years.
