Oil Change Interval Calculator

Calculate when your next oil change is due and how many miles remain until service.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the odometer reading from your last oil change.
  2. Enter the oil change interval recommended by your manufacturer.
  3. Enter your current odometer reading.
  4. The calculator shows the due mileage and miles remaining until service.

Stay on top of engine maintenance by tracking when your next oil change is due.

Formula

Next oil change due (miles) = Last oil change mileage + Oil change interval (miles)

Miles remaining = Next oil change due − Current odometer reading

How it works

This calculator adds the manufacturer- or oil-type-recommended service interval to the odometer reading at the last oil change to determine when the next service is due, then subtracts the current odometer to show how many miles remain before service is needed.

The interval used should match the specific oil type and engine requirements; synthetic oils often allow 7,500–10,000 mile intervals while conventional oils typically require 3,000–5,000 miles. A negative miles-remaining value means the service is already overdue.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Next oil change due: 45,000 miles + 5,000 miles = 50,000 miles
  2. Miles remaining: 50,000 miles − 47,500 miles = 2,500 miles

With the last oil change at 45,000 miles and a 5,000-mile interval, the next service is due at 50,000 miles — 2,500 miles away.

Key terms

Oil change interval
The recommended mileage (or time) between engine oil changes, specified by the vehicle manufacturer or oil supplier. It varies by oil type and engine design.
Odometer
The instrument that measures and displays the total distance a vehicle has traveled since manufacture, used as the reference for service scheduling.
Conventional oil
Petroleum-based motor oil, typically requiring more frequent changes (every 3,000–5,000 miles) than synthetic alternatives.
Synthetic oil
Engineered motor oil with superior thermal stability and longevity, commonly rated for 7,500–10,000+ mile change intervals.
Service due
The odometer mileage at which the next oil change should be performed, calculated as last-change mileage plus the change interval.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my oil?
Conventional oil: every 3,000–5,000 miles. Synthetic blend: 5,000–7,500 miles. Full synthetic: 7,500–10,000 miles or more. Always follow your vehicle's owner's manual.
Does driving style affect oil change frequency?
Yes. Severe service (short trips, extreme temperatures, towing, dusty conditions) shortens intervals. Check your manual's 'severe duty' schedule if this applies to you.
