How to use this tool

  1. Enter your rabbit's age in years.
  2. See the human-equivalent age and life stage.
  3. Senior rabbits (8+ years) benefit from more frequent vet check-ups.

Find out how old your rabbit is in human terms. Rabbits have an average lifespan of 8–12 years, with house rabbits often living longer with good care.

Not veterinary advice. These results are estimates for general guidance only. Always consult a licensed veterinarian before making health, nutrition, or medication decisions for your pet.

Formula

Human-year equivalent by life stage:

  • Under 6 months: human years = rabbit age (years) × 18 ÷ 0.5
  • 6 months – 1 year: human years = 18
  • 1 – 2 years: human years = 18 + (rabbit age − 1) × 14
  • 2 – 8 years: human years = 32 + (rabbit age − 2) × 6
  • Over 8 years: human years = 68 + (rabbit age − 8) × 5

How it works

Rabbits age far more rapidly in their first year than they do in later life, so a simple linear multiplier would be inaccurate; instead, this calculator uses a piecewise conversion scale calibrated to typical rabbit developmental and life-stage milestones.

Life stage labels (Baby, Junior, Adult, Mature, Senior) are assigned alongside the human-year estimate to give context for the rabbit's health-care needs. The conversion is an illustrative approximation based on commonly cited rabbit age equivalency guides, not a veterinary standard.

Worked example

  1. Rabbit age: 3 years — falls in the 2–8 year bracket.
  2. Human years = 32 + (3 − 2) × 6 = 32 + 6 = 38.
  3. Age 3 is ≤ 5, so life stage = Adult.

Human-year equivalent = 38 human years; life stage = Adult

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming rabbits age like small dogs -- rabbits mature extremely rapidly (equivalent to 18 human years in the first 6 months) and then slow significantly, which surprises owners who expect a linear scale.
  • Using the formula for dwarf breeds interchangeably with giant breeds -- larger rabbit breeds tend to have shorter lifespans, so the human-year mapping skews high for them after middle age.
  • Treating the human-year equivalent as a health guide in isolation -- a 5-year-old rabbit is roughly 40 in human years but is already considered senior and should have biannual vet checks regardless of the number.

Key terms

Piecewise age conversion
A calculation method that applies different formulas to different age ranges, reflecting the fact that animals age at varying rates across their lifespan.
Life stage
A categorical label (Baby, Junior, Adult, Mature, Senior) describing a rabbit's developmental phase, which guides appropriate diet, housing, and veterinary care.
Junior
The rabbit life stage covering roughly 6 months to 2 years, equivalent to human teenage years and early adulthood.
Senior rabbit
A rabbit aged over 8 years, typically requiring more frequent veterinary check-ups and possible dietary adjustments for age-related conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How long do rabbits live?
Domestic rabbits typically live 8–12 years, with some reaching 14+ years. Outdoor rabbits tend to have shorter lifespans than indoor house rabbits.
What is a senior rabbit?
Most vets consider rabbits aged 7–8 years and older to be senior. They may need dietary adjustments and bi-annual health checks.
