Reading Speed (WPM) Calculator
Calculate your reading speed in words per minute. Then estimate how long it will take you to finish a book.
How to use this tool
- Enter words read, minutes taken and book length in the fields above.
- Results update instantly as you type — or click Calculate.
- Read your reading speed and the full breakdown beneath it.
Measure your reading speed, then find out how long it will take to finish any book. Average adult reading speed is 200–300 words per minute.
Formula
Reading Speed (wpm) = Words Read ÷ Minutes Taken
Hours to Finish Book = Book Length (words) ÷ Reading Speed (wpm) ÷ 60
How it works
This calculator measures reading speed by dividing a sample word count by the time taken in minutes, yielding words per minute (wpm). It then projects that speed onto a full book by dividing the book's total word count by the calculated wpm and converting minutes to hours. Accuracy depends on the sample being representative of the reader's typical pace; speed may differ for denser or more familiar material.
Worked example
Worked example
- Words read in sample = 1,500, Minutes taken = 5.
- Reading speed = 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300 wpm.
- Book length = 90,000 words.
- Hours to finish = 90,000 ÷ 300 ÷ 60 = 5 hours.
Reading Speed: 300 wpm — Hours to Finish Book: 5 hr
Key terms
- Words per minute (wpm)
- A standard measure of reading speed indicating how many words a person reads in one minute.
- Average adult reading speed
- Typically around 200–300 wpm for non-technical prose; trained readers can exceed 400 wpm.
- Book length
- The total word count of a book; an average novel is roughly 70,000–100,000 words.
- Comprehension rate
- The percentage of read material that is understood and retained; high wpm with low comprehension diminishes the value of speed reading.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the average reading speed?
- The average adult reads 200–300 words per minute for non-fiction. Skilled readers can reach 400–600 wpm with good comprehension.
- How do I count words read?
- Use a passage of known length (e.g. 1,500 words from a book), read it at your normal pace while timing yourself, then enter the values.
