How to use this tool

  1. Enter the number of Satoshis you want to convert.
  2. Read the equivalent value in BTC, mBTC (millibitcoin), and bits (microbitcoin).

Bitcoin is divisible to 8 decimal places. The smallest unit is 1 Satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC. Use this converter to switch between Satoshi, mBTC, bits, and BTC.

Formula

BTC = Satoshis ÷ 100,000,000

mBTC (millibitcoin) = Satoshis ÷ 100,000

Bits (μBTC) = Satoshis ÷ 100

How it works

Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places; the smallest unit is the satoshi, equal to 0.00000001 BTC. This converter applies the fixed divisors that define each denomination: 108 satoshis per BTC, 105 per millibitcoin, and 102 per bit (microbitcoin).

All three results are exact by definition — no rounding or approximation is involved. The converter does not apply any exchange rate, so results are in BTC-denominated units only, not fiat currency.

Worked example

Worked example: convert 100,000,000 satoshis

  1. Input: 100,000,000 satoshis.
  2. BTC = 100,000,000 ÷ 100,000,000 = 1 BTC.
  3. mBTC = 100,000,000 ÷ 100,000 = 1,000 mBTC.
  4. Bits = 100,000,000 ÷ 100 = 1,000,000 bits.

1 BTC = 1,000 mBTC = 1,000,000 bits = 100,000,000 satoshis.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing millibitcoin (mBTC) with millisatoshi -- mBTC is 0.001 BTC (100,000 satoshis), while a millisatoshi is a sub-satoshi unit used only in the Lightning Network and does not exist on the base chain.
  • Misplacing the decimal when converting manually -- 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC; a common error is writing 0.0000001 (one fewer zero), which is 10 satoshis and inflates any satoshi-denominated value by 10x.
  • Assuming satoshi amounts in a wallet display are already in BTC -- some wallet UIs display balances in satoshis by default; reading "50000" as BTC instead of 50,000 satoshis (= 0.0005 BTC) dramatically overstates the holding.

Key terms

Satoshi (sat)
The smallest unit of Bitcoin, equal to 0.00000001 BTC (one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin), named after Bitcoin's creator Satoshi Nakamoto.
Millibitcoin (mBTC)
One thousandth of a bitcoin (0.001 BTC), equal to 100,000 satoshis; often used for mid-range transaction amounts.
Bit (μBTC)
One millionth of a bitcoin (0.000001 BTC), equal to 100 satoshis; sometimes used for small micropayments.
Divisibility
Bitcoin's property of being splittable into up to eight decimal places, making it practical for both tiny and large transactions.
On-chain denomination
All Bitcoin transactions are denominated and stored in satoshis at the protocol level; other units are display conventions only.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Satoshi?
A Satoshi is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 Satoshis (1 hundred million).
What is mBTC and bits?
mBTC (millibitcoin) = 0.001 BTC = 100,000 Satoshis. Bits (μBTC, microbitcoin) = 0.000001 BTC = 100 Satoshis.
