Formula

Weekly total = (weekday_hours × 5) + (weekend_hours × 2)

Daily average = weekly_total ÷ 7

Yearly equivalent days = (weekly_total × 52) ÷ 24

How it works

This calculator totals screen time across a full seven-day week by treating weekdays and weekend days separately, then derives a daily average and an annualised figure in days. The yearly figure converts total screen hours per year into equivalent 24-hour days, giving an intuitive sense of scale. The calculation assumes the same weekday and weekend patterns repeat every week for 52 weeks.

Worked example

  1. Weekday screen time = 6 h/day, Weekend screen time = 8 h/day
  2. Weekly total = (6 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 30 + 16 = 46 h
  3. Daily average = 46 ÷ 7 ≈ 6.57 h/day
  4. Yearly days = (46 × 52) ÷ 24 = 2392 ÷ 24 ≈ 99.67 days

Weekly total: 46.0 h | Daily average: 6.57 h/day | Yearly equivalent: 99.67 days

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting only phone screen time while omitting laptop, TV, and tablet use — total screen exposure is typically 2-3x the phone-only figure.
  • Entering passive TV viewing hours the same as interactive device use — health guidance often distinguishes between passive and interactive screen time, especially for children.
  • Using a single atypical day (e.g. a sick day) as the daily average — base the estimate on a representative week to get a meaningful yearly projection.

Key terms

Screen time
The total duration a person spends looking at any digital screen, including phones, tablets, computers, and televisions, typically measured in hours per day.
Weekly total
The sum of all screen hours accumulated across all seven days of a week, combining five weekdays and two weekend days.
Daily average
The mean screen time per day, calculated by dividing the weekly total by seven.
Yearly equivalent days
Annual screen hours converted into full 24-hour days, illustrating the cumulative scale of screen exposure over a year.

Frequently asked questions

How much screen time is healthy?
The WHO recommends no more than 1 hour per day of recreational screen time for children aged 3–4. For adults, there are no firm limits, but experts suggest taking regular breaks and avoiding screens before bed.
Does all screen time count?
This calculator counts all screen exposure. Work screens and recreational screens have different effects on health; tracking both helps you see your total daily exposure.
