Time Card Calculator
Calculate total hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times, then compute gross pay at your hourly rate.
How to use this tool
- Enter your clock-in and clock-out times.
- Enter unpaid break time (e.g. 30 min for lunch).
- Set your hourly rate.
- Read total hours worked and gross pay.
Calculate your total hours worked from start and end times, minus breaks, then compute your gross pay.
Formula
Start (min) = clock-in hour × 60 + clock-in minute
End (min) = clock-out hour × 60 + clock-out minute
Hours worked = (End − Start − unpaid_break_min) ÷ 60
Gross pay = hours_worked × hourly_rate
How it works
This calculator converts clock-in and clock-out times to total minutes since midnight, subtracts any unpaid break, and divides by 60 to get decimal hours worked; gross pay follows by multiplying by the hourly rate. Times are assumed to fall within the same calendar day — overnight shifts that cross midnight are not supported. The result reflects gross (pre-tax) earnings only; deductions and overtime rules are not applied.
Worked example
Worked example
- Clock-in: 09:00, Clock-out: 17:30, Unpaid break: 30 min, Rate: $20/h
- Start = 9 × 60 + 0 = 540 min
- End = 17 × 60 + 30 = 1050 min
- Hours worked = (1050 − 540 − 30) ÷ 60 = 480 ÷ 60 = 8.0 h
- Gross pay = 8.0 × $20 = $160.00
Hours worked: 8.0 h | Gross pay: $160.00
Key terms
- Decimal hours
- Work duration expressed as a decimal fraction of an hour rather than hours and minutes (e.g. 7.5 h instead of 7 h 30 min), simplifying payroll arithmetic.
- Unpaid break
- A rest period during a work shift for which an employee is not compensated, deducted from total time before calculating pay.
- Gross pay
- Total earnings before any deductions such as income tax, national insurance, or pension contributions are subtracted.
- Hourly rate
- The amount an employee earns for each hour of work, used as the basis for calculating pay in time-based employment arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate hours worked?
- Subtract the start time from the end time in minutes, deduct unpaid breaks, then convert to hours. For example, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM minus 30 min break = 8 hours worked.
- Is gross pay the same as take-home pay?
- No. Gross pay is before tax and deductions. Your actual take-home pay depends on your income tax rate, social security, and any other deductions.
