The Cooper test (Kenneth Cooper, 1968) estimates VO2max from the maximum distance covered in 12 minutes. Run as far as possible on a flat surface for 12 minutes and record the total distance in metres.

How it works
This calculator applies the Cooper (1968) linear regression equation, which was derived from a large sample of military personnel whose measured VO2max values were compared against their 12-minute run distances. Enter the distance you covered during the test and the formula returns an estimated maximal oxygen uptake in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body mass per minute.
The equation assumes a steady, near-maximal effort for the full 12 minutes on a flat surface; results will be less accurate for beginners, older adults, or those who cannot sustain a pace throughout the test.
Worked example

- Divide by the slope: 1895.1 ÷ 44.73 = 42.36 ml/kg/min

Common mistakes to avoid
- Running on a treadmill set to 0% incline — the Cooper test was designed for outdoor tracks; treadmill results tend to be faster and overestimate VO2max by 5-10%.
- Measuring distance in miles then plugging it in without converting to metres — the formula denominator (44.73) assumes metres, so using miles produces a nonsensical result.
- Starting too fast and slowing dramatically in the final 4 minutes — the test requires a steady, sustainable pace; pacing errors reduce the distance covered and underestimate VO2max.
