Walking Time Calculator
Calculate how long it takes to walk any distance at your walking pace.
How to use this tool
- Enter the distance you plan to walk in kilometres.
- Enter your typical walking pace — the average adult walks at 4–5 km/h.
- The calculator returns walking time in hours and minutes.
Calculate how long your walk will take based on distance and your walking speed.
Formula
Total time (h) = Distance (km) ÷ Pace (km/h)
Hours = ⌊Total time⌋
Minutes = Round((Total time − Hours) × 60)
How it works
This calculator divides a given distance by the user's walking pace to produce the total travel time in decimal hours, then converts the fractional part to minutes using rounding. Walking pace varies considerably with terrain, gradient, and fitness level; the commonly cited average is around 5 km/h on flat ground. Results are best treated as planning estimates rather than precise predictions.
Worked example
Worked example
- Distance = 3 km; walking pace = 4 km/h.
- Total time = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75 h.
- Hours (integer part) = ⌊0.75⌋ = 0 h.
- Minutes = Round((0.75 − 0) × 60) = Round(45) = 45 min.
Walking time = 0 h 45 min (0.75 h total)
Key terms
- Walking pace
- Speed of travel on foot, typically expressed in km/h or min/km; average adult pace on flat terrain is approximately 4–5 km/h.
- Naismith's Rule
- A hiking guideline that estimates walking time as 1 hour per 5 km of distance plus 1 hour per 600 m of ascent, adjusting the simple speed formula for hilly terrain.
- Decimal hours
- Time expressed as a single floating-point number of hours, where 0.75 h equals 45 minutes.
- Terrain factor
- An adjustment applied to flat-ground speed estimates to account for rough paths, elevation gain, or poor surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
- How fast is the average walking pace?
- The average adult walking pace is 4–5 km/h (2.5–3.1 mph). Brisk walking is 5–6 km/h. Elderly adults may walk at 3–4 km/h.
- How long does it take to walk 1 km?
- At a typical pace of 5 km/h, 1 km takes 12 minutes. At 4 km/h, it takes 15 minutes.
