Calculate the exact difference between two dates in years, months, and days.

How it works

This tool calculates the precise interval between two calendar dates, expressing the result as a combination of complete years, remaining months, and leftover days. Unlike a simple day count, it mirrors how people naturally describe time: "2 years, 3 months, and 11 days."

Enter a start date and an end date. The calculator subtracts the earlier date from the later one by first counting whole years, then whole months within the remaining span, and finally the leftover days. Leap years and varying month lengths are handled automatically.

Common uses include calculating how long you have worked at a job, how much time has passed since a milestone, or verifying age for legal or administrative purposes. It is also useful for project retrospectives where you need a human-readable duration rather than a raw number of days.

The result is shown in three components (years, months, days) along with the total number of days for reference. Either date can be in the past or future; if the end date is before the start date the tool will indicate a negative span.

Worked example

Length of employment

  1. Enter your start date: 2019-03-15
  2. Enter today as the end date: 2024-09-20
  3. Click Calculate
  4. Read the result: 5 years, 6 months, 5 days

5 years, 6 months, 5 days (total 2016 days)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering the start and end dates in the wrong order and expecting a positive result.
  • Expecting the year count to equal the day count divided by 365 — the two methods differ because of varying month lengths.
  • Forgetting to update the end date to today when you want the duration up to the current moment.

Key terms

Calendar difference
The interval between two dates expressed in years, months, and days rather than a single unit such as total hours or weeks.
Elapsed time
The amount of time that has passed from a reference point to a target point.
Leap year adjustment
Adding an extra day in February every four years (with century exceptions) so the calendar stays aligned with the solar year.

Frequently asked questions

What if the end date is before the start date?
The calculator always returns a positive difference regardless of order.
How are partial months counted?
After subtracting whole years and months, the remaining calendar days in the partial month are counted using the number of days in the preceding month.
