How to use this tool

  1. Click Record screen and choose what to share (screen, window, or tab).
  2. Optionally tick Include system/tab audio before you start.
  3. Click Stop (or stop sharing) and Download the .webm video.

Record your screen, a window, or a browser tab and download a .webm video — all in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

The Screen Recorder lets you capture video of your entire screen, a single application window, or just a browser tab using the browser's built-in Screen Capture API. Click Record, choose what to share in the browser dialog, record your activity, then click Stop. A preview lets you review before you download the video as a .webm file.

No software installation is required and nothing is uploaded to a server. The recording happens entirely within your browser. Audio from the system or tab can optionally be included if you check the Share Audio option in the browser permission dialog; availability varies by browser and operating system.

Screen recording is useful for creating software tutorials, recording bug demonstrations to share with developers, capturing online video content for offline review, creating training materials, and recording gameplay without third-party software. The .webm output can be converted to MP4 using free tools such as FFmpeg or VLC if broader compatibility is needed.

Worked example

Record a short software tutorial

  2. In the browser dialog, select Entire Screen or the specific window to share, then click Share.
  3. Perform the steps you want to demonstrate in your software.
  4. Return to the recorder tab and click Stop.
  5. Review the playback and click Download to save the .webm file.

A .webm screen recording of your tutorial, ready to share or convert.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Selecting only a browser tab when intending to record a desktop application -- choose Entire Screen or Window for non-browser apps.
  • Forgetting to click Stop before switching back to the recorder tab to download, sometimes missing the end of the recording.
  • Not enabling audio sharing in the browser dialog and then finding the downloaded video has no sound.

Key terms

Screen Capture API
A browser interface (getDisplayMedia) that allows web pages to request permission to capture the screen, a window, or a tab.
WebM
An open video container format commonly produced by browser recording tools; supported natively in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Frame rate
The number of video frames captured per second; higher frame rates produce smoother motion but larger files.

Frequently asked questions

Does the video get uploaded?
No — recording is captured and encoded locally with MediaRecorder. The file stays on your device unless you share it yourself.
Can I capture tab audio?
Often yes — tick the audio option. Whether system or tab audio is available depends on your browser and OS choices in the share dialog.
