How to use this tool

  1. Choose white, pink, or brown noise.
  2. Set a comfortable volume.
  3. Click Play to start the looping noise and Stop to silence it.

Play continuous white, pink, or brown noise in your browser to focus, relax, or sleep. Generated locally with the Web Audio API.

How it works

The White Noise Generator creates audio in real time using the Web Audio API without downloading any sound file. White noise fills every frequency with equal energy; pink noise reduces energy as frequency increases, matching the natural noise floor of many environments; brown noise rolls off even more steeply, producing a deep, rumbling sound similar to heavy rain or wind.

All three noise types are generated by an audio buffer source node in your browser. You can adjust volume and switch noise color at any time. The audio stops when you close the tab or click Stop. No audio is recorded or sent anywhere.

White and pink noise are popular for concentration and blocking distracting sounds in open-plan offices. Brown noise is often preferred for sleep and relaxation. Personal preference varies, so try all three to find what works best for you.

Worked example

Use pink noise to focus in a noisy office

  1. Open the tool and select Pink Noise from the noise type options.
  2. Click Play and adjust the volume slider to a comfortable level through speakers or headphones.
  3. Leave the tab open in the background while you work.
  4. Click Stop when you are done to silence the audio.

Continuous pink noise masking office chatter and keyboard sounds, improving focus without headphone fatigue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Setting the volume too high before putting on headphones -- start at a low volume and increase gradually.
  • Expecting the noise to stop automatically after a set time -- there is no built-in timer, so close or mute the tab manually when done.
  • Using the tool on a mobile device with the screen locked and expecting uninterrupted playback -- mobile browsers often pause background audio after a short time.

Key terms

White noise
A random audio signal with equal energy at all frequencies, producing a hiss-like sound.
Pink noise
Noise with equal energy per octave, which sounds more natural than white noise and is often used for sleep and concentration.
Brown noise
Noise with energy that falls off steeply at higher frequencies, producing a deep, low rumble similar to strong wind or rushing water.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between white, pink, and brown noise?
White noise has equal energy per frequency; pink noise falls off with frequency (softer, more natural); brown noise falls off faster still, sounding deep and rumbly.
Is anything downloaded?
No — the noise is synthesised in real time in your browser; nothing is streamed or uploaded.
