How to use this tool

  1. Enter the total distance of your road trip in kilometres.
  2. Enter your expected average speed — 100 km/h is a good estimate for highway driving.
  3. Add the total time you plan to spend on breaks, meals, and fuel stops.
  4. The result shows pure driving time and total door-to-door time.

Plan your road trip schedule by calculating total travel time including rest stops.

Formula

Driving time (h) = Distance (km) ÷ Average speed (km/h)

Total trip time (h) = Driving time + Total break time (h)

How it works

This calculator estimates total road trip duration by dividing the trip distance by the chosen average speed to obtain pure driving time, then adding any scheduled break time on top.

The result assumes a constant average speed throughout the journey and that break time is fixed and known in advance; actual travel times will vary with traffic, road type, and rest stop duration.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Driving time: 600 km ÷ 100 km/h = 6.0 hours
  2. Total trip time: 6.0 hours driving + 1 hour breaks = 7.0 hours

A 600 km trip at 100 km/h with 1 hour of breaks takes 7.0 hours in total (6.0 h driving).

Key terms

Average speed
The mean speed assumed over the entire driving portion of the trip, expressed in km/h. It does not account for stop-and-go traffic or speed limit changes.
Driving time
The time spent behind the wheel moving, equal to distance divided by average speed.
Break time
The total time allocated for rest stops, meals, fuel, and other non-driving pauses, added directly to driving time to get total trip duration.
Total trip time
The end-to-end elapsed time from departure to arrival, including both driving time and all scheduled breaks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate road trip time?
Divide the total distance by your average speed to get driving time, then add your planned break time. For example, 600 km at 100 km/h = 6 hours driving + 1 hour breaks = 7 hours total.
How often should I stop on a long road trip?
Driving safety guidelines recommend taking a 15-minute break every 2 hours of driving to stay alert and reduce fatigue.
