How it works

Memory Tones is a digital recreation of the Simon electronic game. The computer plays a growing sequence of colored flashes, each accompanied by a distinct tone, and you must reproduce the sequence in the same order by clicking the colors. Each successful round adds one more step to the end of the sequence.

The game tests and trains working memory, which is your brain's ability to hold a short sequence of items in mind while actively using them. Psychologist George Miller described working memory capacity as roughly seven items, though the exact limit varies by person and training.

Useful techniques include chunking — grouping every three or four tones into a sub-pattern and memorizing the rhythm rather than individual colors. Saying the color names aloud as they flash also encodes information in both visual and verbal memory channels, which improves recall.

This game is a fun way to measure and gradually extend your working memory span. It is also a quick mental warm-up before tasks that require sustained concentration.

Survive to round 8 using chunking

  1. Rounds 1-3: repeat each color immediately after the flash without worrying about earlier rounds.
  2. Round 4: the sequence is now 4 colors — group the first two as one chunk and the last two as another.
  3. Rounds 5-7: mentally label each chunk with a rhythm rather than individual color names.
  4. Round 8: replay the two chunks from round 6, then add the new color at the end.

Chunking reduces 8 items to 2-3 memorable groups, pushing well past the naive memory limit.

  • Clicking too quickly during the computer's sequence — accidental clicks register as your input and end the round.
  • Trying to memorize every color individually rather than grouping them into rhythmic chunks.
