How to play

  2. Tap the tile whose shade is different from the rest.
  3. Each correct tap advances a round; the grid grows and the difference shrinks.
  4. Wrong taps flash a red outline but don't end the game.
  5. Score as many rounds as you can before the 45-second timer runs out.

A grid of identical colored tiles hides one impostor that's a slightly different shade. Tap it to advance. With every round the grid gets bigger and the color difference gets smaller, testing your color discrimination and visual search speed against a 45-second clock.

How it works

Odd One Out is a visual discrimination game that tests and trains your ability to detect subtle colour differences. A grid of coloured tiles is displayed, and all tiles are the same colour except one, which is a slightly different shade. Tap the odd tile before the timer runs out.

The difficulty scales dynamically: as you progress, the grid grows larger and the colour difference between the odd tile and the rest shrinks. Early rounds present obvious differences; later rounds challenge even people with excellent colour discrimination. The game measures two things simultaneously — the accuracy of your colour perception and your speed under time pressure.

Colour discrimination ability varies significantly between individuals and is affected by factors including age, colour vision deficiencies (colour blindness), screen calibration, and ambient lighting. Playing in a well-lit room on a calibrated display gives the most consistent results. People with red-green colour blindness will find certain hue combinations much harder.

This game is used informally as a visual acuity warm-up and as an entertaining way to explore the limits of human colour perception. Designers and artists sometimes use it to benchmark their colour sensitivity on a given display.

Find the odd tile on an early round

  1. A 3x3 grid of blue tiles appears; one tile is slightly lighter.
  2. Scan the grid quickly without staring at individual tiles — peripheral vision often catches saturation differences faster.
  3. The lighter tile in the bottom-right corner stands out when compared to adjacent tiles.
  4. Tap it before the timer expires.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Staring at individual tiles for too long — scanning the whole grid with a relaxed gaze often reveals the odd tile faster than systematic cell-by-cell inspection.
  • Playing in poor lighting conditions: reflections or dim ambient light significantly distort perceived colours and inflate difficulty artificially.
  • Tapping randomly when stuck: a wrong tap may end the round or waste time. A brief systematic scan (row by row) is faster than a guess when the difference is very subtle.
