Spelling Challenge — See Word, Then Retype It
A word is shown briefly, then hidden. Type it correctly from memory. No audio required.
How to play
- Press 'Start' — a word will flash on screen for a moment.
- After it disappears, type the word exactly as shown.
- Press 'Check Spelling' (or Enter) to submit your answer.
- Every 3 correct in a row bumps up the difficulty; a mistake drops it.
- Complete 15 rounds to see your final score.
A word flashes on screen, then disappears. Type it correctly from memory! Words get longer and harder as you level up. No audio needed — purely visual.
How it works
The Spelling Challenge shows you a word on screen for a brief moment — typically two to three seconds — then hides it. You must then type the word correctly from memory and press Enter to submit. No audio pronunciation is used; the entire challenge is visual, making it accessible to users who are deaf or in a noisy environment.
After you submit, the tool instantly tells you whether your spelling was correct and reveals the correct version so you can compare. Words are drawn from a curated list ranging from common everyday vocabulary to trickier words with silent letters or unusual vowel combinations.
Your score tracks correct answers across a session, and you can keep playing as long as you like. The challenge is particularly useful for students preparing for spelling tests, adults brushing up on written English, or anyone learning English as a second language.
Because there is no audio component, this tool trains the specific skill of recognizing and reproducing the visual pattern of a word — a distinct and important part of spelling ability.
Worked examples
Handling a tricky word
- The word NECESSARY appears on screen for 2 seconds.
- The display hides the word; you recall it has one C and two S letters.
- Type 'necessary' and press Enter.
- The tool confirms correct and highlights the N-E-C-E-S-S-A-R-Y pattern.
Correct answer scored. The visual confirmation reinforces the correct letter sequence for future recall.
Learning from a mistake
- The word ACCOMMODATION flashes briefly.
- You type 'accomodation' (one M).
- The tool marks it incorrect and shows ACCOMMODATION in full.
- Make a mental note: double C and double M.
Incorrect answer; the correct spelling is shown, turning the error into a learning moment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to spell the word aloud using phonics alone — some words sound different from how they are spelled.
- Submitting too quickly before fully recalling the word; take a moment to visualise the full sequence first.
- Ignoring double letters such as LL, MM, or SS, which are among the most common spelling errors.
Key terms
- Visual word memory
- The ability to recall how a word looks in written form, independent of how it sounds.
- Silent letter
- A letter present in a word's spelling that is not pronounced, such as the K in KNEE.
- Flash duration
- The brief time the word is displayed before being hidden; short enough to prevent letter-by-letter copying.
