Formula

Annual Cost = Daily Commute Cost ($) × Work Days per Year

Monthly Average = Annual Cost ÷ 12

How it works

This calculator multiplies your total daily commute cost by the number of days you commute each year to produce a true annual figure. The daily cost should include all relevant expenses — fuel or transit fares, parking, and any other per-trip charges. Dividing by 12 gives a smoothed monthly average, which is useful for budgeting even though commuting costs are rarely spread perfectly evenly across months.

Worked example

  1. Daily commute cost = $12; Work days per year = 235.
  2. Annual cost = $12 × 235 = $2,820.
  3. Monthly average = $2,820 ÷ 12 = $235.

Annual commute cost: $2,820.00 | Monthly average: $235.00

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting only fuel cost and ignoring per-mile vehicle depreciation and maintenance, which typically adds $0.10-$0.20 per mile.
  • Using calendar days instead of actual work days per year -- 260 work days is the standard baseline for a full-time schedule.
  • Forgetting tolls or parking fees that occur every trip, which can easily add hundreds of dollars to the annual figure.

Key terms

Daily commute cost
The total out-of-pocket cost for a single round trip to work, including fuel, fares, tolls, and parking.
Work days per year
The number of days per year you actually commute. A typical full-time schedule is around 230–260 days after accounting for weekends, holidays, and leave.
Annual commute cost
The total amount spent on commuting over a full calendar year, calculated as daily cost times commuting days.
Monthly average
Annual cost divided by 12 — a smoothed figure used for monthly budget planning.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate yearly commuting costs?
Add up all daily costs (fuel, parking, transit) and multiply by the number of working days you commute. Don't forget to include vehicle wear and tear.
What is the average commute cost in the US?
According to various surveys, the average American worker spends roughly $2,000–$5,000 per year on commuting, depending on distance and transport mode.
